The tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004, caused unprecedented death and destruction in the southern Thai province of Phang-nga. K.I.Asia quickly allocated existing resources and expertise to assist in the near term. In particular, funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Trade Development Agency (USTDA) was dedicated to assist small and medium size enterprises, entrepreneurs and community savings groups get refinanced and back in business. In addition, funding from the American Corporations of Thailand (ACT) provided scholarships for middle school students at risk of dropping out of school, with scholarships. For longer term development, K.I.Asia designed the Tsunami Recovery Action Initiative (TRAI). This three-year initiative focuses on building capacities in sustainable tourism, including implementing sustainable tourism education; developing the capabilities of tourism entrepreneurs, hotel managers, and tourism industry staff; and building community participation in sustainable tourism. K.I.Asia has received USD one million in generous support from the Kenan Charitable Trust and the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise for this initiative. K.IAsia is concentrating its efforts on the Lam Kaen and Kuk Kak communities, including the resort area of Khao Lak. The Kenan TRAI program has two broad goals: 1) to improve the livelihoods of those affected by the tsunami in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner; and, 2) to pilot and document a model for other communities to use to recover from disasters. K.I.Asia is implementing the program in close collaboration with the Phang-nga Governor’s office, Phang-nga Tourist Association, Ministry of Education and the Lam Kaen Tambon Administration Office. K.I.Asia is also carrying out the “Community Based Tsunami Recovery Action Initiative for Phang-nga" (CB-TRAI) in Phang-nga province. CB-TRAI will run for 18 months, starting in July 2007, and focus on sustainable tourism capacity building activities in local communities in Phang-nga. Project activities cover microfinance, entrepreneurship, and marketing training, as well as a special student entrepreneurship project. To provide these services, K.I.Asia has been awarded nearly 20 million baht (approximately $600,000 USD) from the European Union, managed by the Thailand Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), under the EU’s Social Support Program – tsunami extension. Through support from the Kenan Charitable Trust, K.I.Asia will be contributing 15% cost share for the program.
In order to support the small-scale fishing folk, K.I.Asia is partnering with Gannon Realty to design and build the Long Tail Fishing Boat Repair Center and Pier in the Lam Kaen community. This facility will allow the fisher folk to have a safe and cost-effective place to repair boats and unload fresh fish. The fisher folk are also looking for opportunities to use the facility as a way to engage tourists. Generous funding is being provided by the Bush-Clinton Tsunami Relief Fund and the Kenan Charitable Trust. A related education program is the Inquiry-based Science and Technology Education Program (IN-STEP). This project is dedicated to building basic science education teaching capacities at middle schools in Phang-nga. The development of science knowledge, especially in ecology and biology, will support the Phang-nga Province’s goal of being a destination for sustainable tourism. The three-year program is being implemented with the Ministry of Education, Merck Institute for Science Education, and leading science educators in Thailand. The program is funded by MSD (Thailand) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the US-based Merck & Co., Inc.
Finally, K.I.Asia is establishing Community Technology and Learning Development Centers (CTLCs) in Phang-nga in cooperation with the Phang-nga Community College. Supported by Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential Program, K.I.Asia is using lessons learned from CTLCs the Institute set up in other provinces such as Mae Hong Son and Ranong. The centers will provide opportunities for community members to improve and apply their IT competencies to their livelihoods.
